How do bloggers make money?
One of the reasons that blogging is such a great job is that there are many different ways that bloggers can make money. Blogging is an awesome career because it can provide multiple streams of income, and many of them are passive methods of earning money once you do the initial work.
Having multiple streams of income is important because sometimes, as many business owners learn the hard way, the environment changes or customer sentiment changes, and what was once an excellent stream of income slows down or even dries up.
So the more ways that you can monetize your blog, the less any one particular means of income affects your overall earnings.
There are many potential means of earning income as a blogger, and in this article I discuss 11 of the most common and profitable ways to earn income with a blog.
How bloggers make money through affiliate marketing
Affiliate marketing is one of the easiest ways to make money as a blogger.
Affiliate marketing is where you earn money (a commission) by recommending products and services to other people. The person who recommends the product or service is called an affiliate (sometimes also called a publisher).
You can earn an amazing income through affiliate marketing. It was actually through reading the income reports of Michelle Schroeder-Gardner, who makes a substantial income through affiliate marketing (over $50,000 per month), that I first realized the incredible earning potential of blogging in general and affiliate marketing in particular.
And when I decided that I was going to go all in and give blogging my best effort to see if I could become a full-time blogger, Michelle’s course Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing was the first course that I bought.
In the course, Michelle walks you through the basics of affiliate marketing and the best ways to make money through affiliate marketing.
If you believe that starting a blog (or even using Facebook or Twitter or Pinterest or Instagram or other social media sites) to earn income is something you would enjoy and be good at, then I strongly recommend that you take Michelle’s course and incorporate affiliate marketing as one of your methods of generating income.
How bloggers make money through ads with private advertisers
Advertising can be a great way to earn money with your blog, especially if you have a lot of visitor traffic. If you prefer, you can work with companies directly to advertise on your blog. This takes more effort than working with ad networks (described below), but the potential income could also be more.
How bloggers make money with ads through ad networks
If you prefer to work with ad networks rather that working directly with private companies, there are many available. Here are three of the most popular ones:
Google AdSense. This is Google’s basic ad network, and it’s a great option for beginning bloggers because you don’t have to have a certain amount of monthly traffic to participate.
Media.net. Media.net can be comparable in compensation to Google AdSense. They don’t have a minimum page view requirement as far as I have been able to find. You can find their program guidelines here.
Mediavine. You can apply to join Mediavine when you have at least 25,000 page views per month. Mediavine is the ad network that I have partnered with, and they have amazing customer service! Seriously—they have the best customer service I think I have ever seen with a company. They really want to help you succeed. And that makes sense—because when you succeed, they succeed. 🙂 Not only do they help with tech issues, but they help you know how to best optimize your pages and your site for ad revenue. They are awesome!
AdThrive. With AdThrive, you need to have a minimum of 100,000 page views per month.
How bloggers make money with sponsored posts
With sponsored posts, a company pays you to write an article promoting their products or services.
For this means of income to be successful, it is helpful (though not always necessary) to have a large audience. One couple who make an awesome income from writing sponsored posts are Heather and Pete Reese of It’s a Lovely Life. They make over $30,000 a month from their blog, and most of that income is from sponsored posts.
How bloggers make money with guest posting
Guest posting is another way that you can make money blogging.
Though many blog owners give other bloggers the opportunity to guest post on their blog primarily to offer a new and fresh voice to their readers and to have additional content that they themselves don’t have to write, some blogs actually do pay for guest posts.
You can find a list of 121 blogs that pay for guest posts here.
How bloggers make money with webinars
Also known as a web conference, a webinar is a seminar held over the internet.
Creating webinars can be another great method to earn online income, either through the webinar itself (by charging people to attend the webinar to learn the content), or by using the webinar to introduce people to you and your brand and in that way drive sales of a product or service that you offer.
How bloggers make money with paid content (selling memberships or subscriptions)
If you have the type of content on your site that people will be willing to pay for, having a paid membership or subscription site can be an effective way to monetize.
For example, if you have a health and fitness website, you might charge a monthly membership fee to participate in fitness challenges or programs that can help people stay motivated to get in better shape.
Or if you can effectively teach others how to run their businesses and make money, that is another potential model for making money through a membership or subscription site.
How bloggers make money with digital or physical products
Another method of earning money as a blogger that has amazing income potential is selling either digital or physical products (or both). In fact, some authors and business owners create blogs for the primary purpose of selling their products.
Books. Since bloggers write for a living, authoring a book or ebook is of course naturally a good fit for many of them.
In fact, many bloggers create the content for their book largely from the content of their blog articles. For an excellent resource for how to publish your first ebook, I recommend Suzi Whitford’s Ebook by Number course, where she walks you step by step through the process.
Everything that Suzi does is awesome! I’ve purchased all of her courses now (she has many of them; perhaps 8 or 10 or more?), and they are well worth the money! She is a fun, engaging teacher who really knows her stuff and who teaches in a way that you can easily learn and follow along.
Templates. Templates, when done well, can be a great time saver. Bloggers can market and sell templates for creating books, writing emails, creating opt-in offers, and more. I have purchased some of these templates myself for various aspects of blogging. 🙂 They help to make getting things done quicker and easier!
Courses. Sometimes an online course is a natural extension of a great book (or even various blog posts) you have written.
Online courses can be another great method for online income. Once you have written one or more books, you can look at expanding that content into online courses using platforms such as Teachable, Thinkific, and Udemy.
To learn how to turn your book into a course, I recommend Suzi’s online Course by Number that walks you step by step through the process of creating and launching your first online course. Again, I love the way that Suzi teaches because she is warm and engaging. She really knows her stuff, but she teaches in a non-techy way that makes learning easy.
Merchandise. Creating merchandise can be another profitable (and fun!) way to monetize your blog. Common merchandise bloggers sell include T-shirts, mugs, hats, and other similar paraphernalia, but other products include planners and calendars, for example
One blogger who has made an awesome income from selling products is Rosemarie Groner of the Busy Budgeter website. She now makes over $100,000 a month, and much of that income is from selling the products (primarily digital books) she has created. Another example is Michelle Schroeder-Gardner of Making Sense of Cents, who sells an online affiliate marketing course (that I have taken and highly recommend if you want to learn how to make an awesome income through affiliate marketing!). She also makes over $100,000 a month, as do bloggers Heather and Pete Reese of It’s a Lovely Life. Pretty incredible.
How bloggers make money with related services
Many bloggers, especially initially, supplement their incomes by offering services such as doing freelance writing or by working as virtual assistants.
Until your blog is making a consistent full-time income, this is a great way to get both additional experience and more exposure to your blog.
Would you be interested in being a virtual assistant? This is a relatively new field, and one where you can develop your skills in one (or more) of several different directions.
The pay can be great, and you can take on as much or as little work as you would like in order to work the number of hours that fit your current schedule. If you’re interested in making a great income as a virtual assistant, I recommend taking the course 30 Days or Less to Virtual Assistant Success by VA pro Gina Horkey, which has excellent reviews.
And if you love Pinterest, the course Become a Pinterest VA Today by Kristin Larsen and Gina Horkey might just be a great option for you.
How bloggers make money with public speaking
One reason that some people get into blogging is to establish credibility in their field.
And once that credibility is achieved and the person has a trusted voice in the particular community, public speaking opportunities may become available.
If you have enough authority in your particular area, public speaking can be a great money maker.
How bloggers make money with private bootcamps
A bootcamp is an organized effort where you work with clients who have signed up to accomplish a particular goal in a certain amount of time.
So, for instance, if you write a health and fitness blog, you might offer a weight loss bootcamp where you work with a group of individuals to work out and eat healthy and use portion control and so on in order to help them lose weight (perhaps a certain percentage of their body weight) within a specified time period, such as three months.
This can be both a fun and very rewarding way to earn money and can allow you to form deeper relationships with your clients as you work together to reach a common goal.
There are many great reasons to join the blogosphere—and the potential to earn a great income is only one of them!
Even if you think you don’t have anything unique or noteworthy to contribute, that’s not true! Your voice and your experiences and perspective are an important addition.
So if you have a message you want to share, if you enjoy writing and want to help people to change and improve their lives, and if you love the other benefits of blogging like the limitless (passive) earning potential and flexible schedule and autonomy, then give blogging a try!
You can read more about the benefits of blogging here.
I love blogging (what I really mean to say is, I love, love, love blogging because it’s one of the best jobs ever!) because of the limitless earning potential and, even more, because I love to write and to share my thoughts about personal finance and help people win with their money! And I love it because you totally work on your own schedule, from anywhere you want!
Read this article to learn how to create a profitable blog. You can also read about some fascinating income reports of bloggers here. Some of these bloggers make $20,000, $50,000, $100,000, or $200,000 or more a month. It’s amazing!
If you’re interested in creating a profitable blog, I recommend the Blog by Number course and ebook by Suzi Whitford. It’s the course that I took to get started as a newbie blogger. You can complete the course in less than three hours (not all in one sitting, unless you want to! :D) and have an excellent introduction to how to start a blog and how to begin monetizing it in order to make money.
